Could specialization to cold-water upwelling systems influence gene flow and population differentiation in marine organisms? A case study using the blue-footed booby, Sula nebouxii

چکیده
Aim We assessed population differentiation and gene flow across the range of the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) (1) to test the generality of the hypothesis that tropical seabirds exhibit higher levels of population genetic differentiation than their northern temperate counterparts, and (2) to determine if specialization to cold-water upwelling systems increases dispersal, and thus gene flow, in bluefooted boobies compared with other tropical sulids.

Evidence for Asymmetrical Divergence-Gene Flow of Nuclear Loci, but Not Mitochondrial Loci, between Seabird Sister Species: Blue-Footed (Sula nebouxii) and Peruvian (S. variegata) Boobies
Understanding the process of speciation requires understanding how gene flow influences divergence. Recent analyses indicate that divergence can take place despite gene flow and that the sex chromosomes can exhibit different levels of gene flow than autosomes and mitochondrial DNA. Using an eight marker dataset including autosomal, z-linked, and mitochondrial loci we tested the hypothesis that ...
متن کاملEvidence for strong assortative mating, limited gene fl ow, and strong differentiation across the blue-footed/Peruvian booby hybrid zone in northern Peru
Hybrid zones represent natural laboratories in which the processes of divergence and genetic isolation can be examined. Th e generation and maintenance of a hybrid zone requires mispairing and successful reproduction between organisms that diff er in one or more heritable traits. Understanding the dynamics of hybridization between two species requires an understanding of the extent to which the...
متن کاملEvolvability of an avian life history trait declines with father's age.
Studies of laboratory organisms have suggested that parental age affects the genetic variance of offspring traits. This effect can engender age-specific variance in genetic contributions to evolutionary change in heritable traits under directional selection, particularly in age-structured populations. Using long-term population data of the blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii), we tested whether ge...
متن کاملClimatic influence on demographic parameters of a tropical seabird varies with age and sex.
In marine ecosystems climatic fluctuation and other physical variables greatly influence population dynamics, but differential effects of physical variables on the demographic parameters of the two sexes and different age classes are largely unexplored. We analyzed the effects of climate on the survival and recruitment of both sexes and several age classes of a long-lived tropical seabird, the ...
متن کاملMale preference for female foot colour in the socially monogamous blue-footed booby, Sula nebouxii
Female ornaments are expected to evolve through sexual selection when male parental investment is high. Blue-footed boobies are socially monogamous seabirds with a long period of biparental care. Males and females have colourful feet that are displayed ostentatiously during courtship, both before and after pairing, and extrapair copulations are frequent. We manipulated the foot colour of paired...
